Summary: From the inter-titles of early cinema to the branded
cityscapes of imagined futures in contemporary film, typography has a
central place in motion pictures. This panel will examine the use of
typography and printed text in film, including (but not limited to)
textual analyses of credit sequences. All proposals should have a
central focus on typography while specific approaches can vary ? all
periods, genres, and methodologies are welcome. Possible topics include:
** close readings of films (or the work of a single filmmaker) which
place an emphasis on typography within the mise en scène
** textual analysis of a particular credit sequence
** a study of the practice of title design
** the examination of the use of corporate brands in film
** the role of typography and printed text in experimental and
avant-garde film practice
All submissions will receive notification from the organizer by August
7th, 2006.
