UPDATE: Identity Politics - All Periods/Genres (9/15/06; NEMLA, 3/1/07-3/4/07)

full name / name of organization:
Kimberly Eaton

This is a call for papers for a panel titled "The Act of Shifting Borders in Identity Politics" for the 2007 NEMLA (Northeast Modern Language Association) Convention from March 1, 2007 to March 4, 2007 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Gloría Anzaldúa uses the term mestizaje to describe the embodiment of simultaneous identities and the inherent contradictions for women writers and theorists in belonging to multiple cultures at the same time. The borders that separate these identities perpetually change, reflecting the continual shift that marks identity politics. How do these borders create a cultural identity that transcends the notion of multiple, split cultures? How do cultural borders affect race, class, gender, nationality and ethnicity?
