"The Documentary Tradition"

Area: An American Family

On January 11th 1973, PBS aired the first of a
twelve-part series entitled An American Family. The
groundbreaking documentary chronicled the day to day
experiences of the Loud family from Santa Barbara,
California. Mixing techniques of Direct Cinema and
Cinema Vérité, the filmmakers explored many of the
issues that concerned Americans during the turbulent
decade of the 1970s. Two of the important themes they
explored were the crumbling of the American Dream and
the breakdown of the American Family. The series was
viewed by over ten million viewers and attracted
considerable controversy. We are inviting submissions
on all aspects of this pioneering documentary.
Deadline for submission is August 15, 2006.
         
The Film and History League conference details can be
found at www.filmandhistory.org. The meeting focuses
on "The Documentary Tradition" and will run from 8-12
November, 2006 in the Dolce Conference Center near the
DFW airport. A spectrum of other areas will evolve on
the web site over time, but there are now over 30
subject areas listed.
