Submissions are invited for a session on Incorporating Visual Culture in
Writing and Literature Classrooms at the 2007 NEMLA conference in
Baltimore, MD March 01 - March 04, 2007.

In writing and literature courses it has become common to include visual
texts or writings about visual culture, to develop assignments with visual
components, and to encourage students to develop visual, as well as
textual, literacy. The panel will focus on the use and study of visual
culture in writing and literature classrooms from across the English
curriculum, from freshman composition to professional writing and graduate
seminars, in order to survey they way visual culture impacts teaching
practices. Some possible topics for consideration include: the use of
multimedia texts (films,
advertisements, graphic novels, hypertext works, collage art); the study of
contemporary visual culture; creating alternative assignments related to
visual texts; and the theory and teaching of the intersection between
visual culture and issues of race, class, gender, and nation.

Graduate students are encouraged to submit. Send 1-page abstracts and
contact information by September 15. Electronic submissions are preferred
and should be sent to Angela Laflen at
