"The Documentary Tradition"

"The City" is conceived by the conference organizers as an expansive and =
open area. Along with traditional documentary such as Ric Burns's "New =
York," papers will consider topics ranging from Michael Moore's use of =
urban space to Vertov's urban setting in "Man With a Movie Camera" and =
Ruttman's "Berlin." Please direct questions about the suitability of =
topics to me at WitternKellerL_at_uncw.edu. Or send individual paper =
proposals or full panel proposals (three papers) to =
WitternKellerL_at_uncw.edu by July 20, 2006.=20

Plenary sessions at the conference will include:

Raymond Fielding, dean of scholars when it comes to the study of the =
newsreel and

            author of "The American Newsreel: A Complete History."

                         =20

Betsy McLane, co-author of "A New History of Documentary Film," a major =
work in the

            field of the genre.

Allen Mondell and Cynthia Salzman Mondell, documentary filmmakers with =
oeuvre devoted to the ethnic experience in

            America and the experience of women. (www.mediaprojects.org)

Glenn Marcus and historians who researched "March of the Bonus Army" for =
PBS. This session will feature detailed discussions

            of writing history with the pen and the camera stylo.

James Welsh, Editor (Emeritus) of the Literature/Film Quarterly will =
chair a special session of film journal editors to talk with

            participants about publication opportunities and goals.
