After putting together some terrific MLA panels on this subject,
we're inviting additional authors to contribute to a volume on the
depictions of age in the media. The working title is

Aging and Staging

Theorists argue that age is a performative construction, which is
nowhere more evident than on the stage and screen. This volume will
examine the performance of age in theatre, film, television, and
other media. These are among many possible questions that
contributors may choose to consider:

How do performances of age mark advanced age as a category of
difference, and how do they subvert or refute such categorization?
How do professional performers enact aging? What gives their
performances truth value?
How do performances of age reflect, shape, and/or resist cultural norms?
How do scripts suggest that age should be played, and how much is
left to the individual production?
How do actors perform the meanings of youth, middle age, and old age?
How are the markings of middle age and old age similar to or
different from the markings of youth?
How can performances reinforce or disrupt ageism and age positivism?
How are parodies of aging constructed?
How does the performance of age intersect with performances of
gender, race, class, and other categories of difference?

Explorations of the full spectrum of age in all aspects of theatrical
and media productions are welcome.
