Special Session: The Panoptic and The Middle Ages Revisited

The 2006 panel focused on the possible application of panopticism in the understanding and interpretation of medieval culture. Topics ranged from the soaring castle over landscapes to the winged Daedelus, from Chaucer to Langland, and bioveillance and dataveillance and the Fourth Lateran Council. For the 2007 session we want to focus on Foucault and his philosophy in relation to medieval culture. How much or how little--how viable--can the panoptic concept be applied to the understanding and interpretation of medieval culture? Can certain aspects provide a valid vision of medieval culture? These are some of the questions we can attempt to address in this panel. Submissions are welcome from all disciplines of the Humanities. Theoretical or pedagogical approach to this topic is also welcome.
