Frederick Wiseman and the Institution Area
2006 Film & History Conference
“The Documentary Traditionâ€
8-12 November, 2006
Dolce Conference Center â€" Dallas, TX
www.filmandhistory.org
Deadline: August 10th, 2006
AREA: Frederick Wiseman and the Institution
Frederick Wiseman is one of the most important living documentary
filmmakers. His work represents four decades of intimate but demanding
examinations of modern institutions in American society. Wiseman has
created strictly observational work for much of the second half of the
twentieth century while denying the claims of direct cinema to “truth.â€
This delicate balance between institutional critique and artistic
observation has produced historical documents, experiential poetry and a
deep influence on the breadth and depth of the documentary tradition.
Additionally, formal combinations of documentary observation and realist
fictions have become an important in the wake of Wiseman. This area will
examine Wiseman’s work, taking his particular institutional emphasis to be
significant in many realms. We are inviting submissions on all aspects of
the work of Frederick Wiseman.
“Ultimately, Wiseman has showed us that the ultimate institution is life
itself, and properly speaking, we should all be institutionalized."--Errol
Morris
