The Centre for Advanced Studies, Department of English, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, invites papers for an International Conference on Western Popular Literature and Its Reception in India on 18-19 December 2006.
The Conference will address historical issues such as the following:
How western literature reached India.
How the Indian population used its knowledge of western languages, particularly English, to develop a taste for fiction, sometimes in preference to other genres
How translation, imitation, and innovation marked the history of the reception of popular literary forms
How dominant genres emerged in a space of literary contestation
How British and non-British works were read and imitated
How the western 'canon' was constituted for an Indian reader
'Canonical' vs 'Popular'
How reading practices affected and were affected by the book market
Specific authors
Presentations should not take longer than 30 minutes, Abstracts of proposed papers, not exceeding 500 words, may be sent within 15th September 2006 by electronic mail to the addresses given below, or by ordinary mail to
