"W. G. Sebald and the European Tradition

For more than thirty years, W. G. 'Max' Sebald taught European Literature
and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia until his untimely
death in 2001. Reluctant to call his work 'novels', he published hybrid
books that meditate upon history, human tragedy, memory, writing and the
inner life. Sebald wrote against the mainstream contemporary novel, in an

unmistakably distinctive voice that greatly enriched European culture. 'W.G.
Sebald and the European Tradition' will provide a unique opportunity to
assess the significance of his oeuvre, not only bringing together several

of the foremost Sebald critics reflecting on the writing, but also placing
his writings in a wider and creative context provided by several special

events. The conference includes the presentation of BCLT's annual Literary
Translation Prizes, the first Sebald Conversation between Hans Magnus

Enzensberger and David Constantine.
