UPDATE: Crossings: Assimilation and Acculturation (8/15/06; 11/9/06-11/11/06)
The Fletcher Lecture Series Committee of Nicholls State University is
pleased to announce the First Fletcher Lecture Series Conference,
featuring a keynote address by 2006 Fletcher Lecturer Henry Louis Gates,
Jr. The conference will be held November 9-11, 2006, on the campus of
Nicholls State University, Thibodaux, Louisiana, located in the Bayou
Region of South Louisiana (1 hr. from New Orleans or Baton Rouge; 1 1/2
hours from Lafayette).
General Subject: "Crossings: Assimilation and Acculturation"
Submission deadline extended to August 15, 2006
Proposal topics may be narrowly focused on any aspect of Henry Louis
Gates, Jr.'s career and accomplishments or broadly focused on any aspect
of the title concerns: cross-racial/cross-cultural literary encounters,
assimilation, acculturation. Potential topics may be cross-disciplinary
(particularly in history and sociology) as long as the focus remains
humanistic rather than technical. Sample topics areas include:
* African-American history and literature
* Protest literature
* Crossing racial barriers
* African and Caribbean Influences on African-American Literature
* Wole Soyinka
* The Blues
* The Harlem Renaissance
* The Literature of Affirmative Action
* Henry Gates's works, historical contexts, and contributions,
especially to our understanding of American culture
A Thursday keynote address by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. will be followed by
one and a half conference days. Additional events will include Stanley
Coleman's performance of Phillip Hayes Dean's Paul Robeson. Proceedings
volume anticipated.
To submit a proposal for an individual presentation, send a title
(8-word maximum), a 250-word abstract, and a 50-word (maximum) summary
for the conference program. To submit a proposal for a panel, do the
same for the overall panel; cite individual participants (names,
presentation titles, brief overviews). Submit by email to
