The Graduate Film Studies Group of the University of
Florida seeks proposals for Reel Fear: Horror,
Suspense, and Anxiety in Postmodern Film. This
symposium will be held at the University of Florida on
October 20th, 2006.
The daylong event will consist of academic panels,
along with lectures by our two keynote speakers: Carol
J. Clover and Adam Lowenstein.
Topics for proposals can include a wide variety of
approaches to cinematic depictions of anxiety and
terror in the postmodern age. We encourage papers that
examine fear in genres beyond the horror film.
Possible topics could include, but are not limited to:
-Recent cinematic recreations of 9-11
-The popularity of Asian psychological horror cinema
-Religious and political conspiracy films
-Depictions of technological surveillance
-New directions in genre films such as police and
political thrillers
-The resurgence of slasher and zombie films
-Fear and reality in popular documentaries
All proposals must be submitted by August 11, 2006.
Email a short bio and a 250-500 word proposal to both
Scott Balcerzak <balcer_at_ufl.edu> and Katherine
Casey-Sawicki <ksawicki_at_ufl.edu>
