Teaching Race to Undergraduates: Problems and Approaches in the
Humanities and Social Sciences

A Conference at St Francis College, Brooklyn, NY

March 15-16, 2007

An interdisciplinary conference examining the methods, experiences,
breakthroughs and problems of teaching race to a diverse student body in
higher education. The event will begin on Thursday, March 15, 2007 with
an evening keynote speaker and reception. Conference panels will take
place on March 16th and include speakers from the social sciences and
the humanities.

This conference is devoted to the question of how we can improve the
discussion of race in the classroom. For the humanities panel, we are
also looking for proposals that in some way examine the language of
classroom discussions on race and emphasize cross-disciplinary and
interdisciplinary perspectives. Presenters might also discuss the kind
of work texts do in teaching race (and strategies for letting the
discussion wander off the text); the use of, or place for, statistics
and other resources from the social sciences in the humanities
classroom; methods and insights for the orchestration of classroom
discussion; thoughts on dealing with anger, embarrassment and students
who dominate air time; theories about the way knowledge is created that
affect ideas about race; how discussions about race affect the
co-construction of student and teacher identities; intersections of sex,
gender, sexuality and class; specific classroom realities: the race of
the instructor, the students and the status of the institution.=20

Please send abstracts of 250-300 words by October 27th to the address
below. This call for papers is for the humanities panel only. We
especially invite the participation of scholars and writers of color.
