Call for Papers: International Medieval Congress, Western Michigan University,
Kalamazoo, MI, 10-13 May 2007

This session will gather new research on women and law in the Middle Ages.
Women are often seen as merely the victims of medieval law rather than
active participants in it; this panel seeks papers that explore a variety of
ways that women interacted with and influenced legal culture in the Middle
Ages. Papers might explore marriage law, rape legislation or inheritance
rights for daughters; they might also explore literary texts that depict
women as manipulating the law in the service of a feminist or
self-supportive ideology. We envision this panel to be interdisciplinary,
attracting work in legal studies, history, literary criticism and feminist
theory.
