CFP: Women, Dying, and Death (10/13/06; journal issue)
Women's Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal is seeking submissions =
for a special issue focused on women, dying, and death. The Year of =
Magical Thinking, Joan Didion's book about what life is like after the =
death of both her husband and daughter, was an unexpected best-seller =
given the difficult nature of the material. A personal narrative of =
grief, the book's success is indicative of both the fascination and the =
dread of the processes of death and dying. This special issue will =
examine the representations and images of women, dying, and death across =
cultural, religious, and artistic boundaries.
Topics can include but are not limited to:
The female victim/body in horror and noir film
Cultural and religious interpretations of death and dying
        The dying woman in literature
Images of the grieving woman in art
Photographing the dead: Postmortem photography and the process of grief
        Mourning and motherhood
Women's Studies publishes 8 issues a year, providing a forum for the =
presentation of scholarship and criticism about women in the fields of =
literature, history, art, sociology, law, political science, economics, =
anthropology and the sciences. It also publishes poetry, film and book =
reviews.
We encourage men and women from all disciplines to submit articles based =
in film, television, literature, art, or other media.
