Teaching the Works of Octavia Butler
In February of 2006, Octavia Butler unexpectedly passed away at the age
of 58 after sustaining an injury. This panel seeks to honor her literary
legacy and her impact on the American and African American literature
classroom. Presentations should focus on PEDAGOGICAL approaches to
Butler's works. (A second NEMLA panel is dedicated to critical and
theoretical approaches). Presentations are welcome on _Kindred_, the
Patternist series, the Xenogenesis series, the Parable series, and other
works. Presenters might discuss successful approaches to selected works;
teaching Butler in a comparative context ("Butler AND ____");
experiences with reading groups; and many other relevant subjects.
Submit cover letter and 1-2 page proposals to Dr. Eva Tettenborn, Penn
State Worthington Scranton, 120 Ridge View Dr., Dunmore, PA 18512, or
