Envisioning Home

Keynote speakers: Laura Slatkin (NYU and University of Chicago) and
Joshua Landy (Stanford University)

Novalis writes, "Philosophy is really homesickness: it is the desire to
be at home everywhere." The 2006 CUNY Comparative Literature Graduate
Conference will provide a forum for an examination of "home" as place,
idea, dream, object, memory, concept, and expression. What function does
the home serve in art? What are the literary implications of nostalgia
and the loss of home? What role do notions of personal and political
identity play in considering home?=20

We are soliciting comparative papers that explore the way in which
"home" as an idea functions in a broad spectrum of genres and media from
antiquity to the present. In addition to literary papers, we welcome
interdisciplinary work that relates to the topic.=20

To submit a paper for consideration, please email an abstract of no more
than 500 words to cunycomplit.conference_at_gmail.com

The Comparative Literature Department's previous conferences have
included a broad discussion of the nature of beauty, as well as a more
focused look at contemporary poetry, both of which drew participants
