The Jewish Studies Area, in conjunction with the Science Fiction and Fantasy=

Area, of the Popular Culture Association is organizing at least one panel on=
=20
Jewish influences on the science fiction genre in literature, film, and=20
television for the 2007 ACA/PCA Conference being held in Boston, Massachuset=
ts, April=20
4-7, 2007. =20
=20
Areas to be explored include -- but are not exclusive to -- the following=20
topics:
=20
-- Isaac Asimov, father of modern science fiction, professor at Boston=20
University, and originator of such science fiction staples as the
positronic robotic/android brain and the Three Laws of Robotics
-- David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) of Independence Day as a Jewish hero who=20
saves the world
-- Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner and their influence on Star Trek=20
-- Steven Speilberg and his various Science Fiction films, such as
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, AI, Jurassic Park, and
War of the Worlds
-- Armin Shimerman=E2=80=99s Ferengi businessman/bar owner Quark in Star Tre=
k:=20
Deep Space Nine
-- Walter Koenig playing hero Pavel Chekov in Star Trek and villain Al Beste=
r
in Babylon 5

While this is a short list, there are many, many more Jewish writers,=20
directors, and actors who have been and still are a significant influence in=
the=20
science fiction genre. Presentations should examine Jewish influences in th=
e=20
science fiction and fantasy genres.

Proposals should be approximately 250 words in length and must include your=20
mailing address, telephone number, and email address.

All proposals should be emailed to both the Area Chair and Associate Area=20
