The Jewish Studies Area of the Popular Culture Association is organizing at=20
least one panel on specifically evaluating the body of work by the=20
multi-talented Mel Brooks for the 2007 conference of the ACA/PCA in Boston,=20=
Massachusetts,=20
April 4-7, 2007.

Since his days as a writer for Sid Caesar=E2=80=99s Your Show of Shows, Mel=20=
Brooks=20
has been a significant force in television and motion pictures, and, most=20
recently, on Broadway. His body of work includes the recordings, with Carl=20=
Reiner,=20
of his character The 2,000-Year-Old Man, creating with Buck Henry the Don=20
Adams spy spoof Get Smart, producing such important films as The Elephant Ma=
n,=20
writing and directing such films as The Twelve Chairs, The Producers, Blazin=
g=20
Saddles and Young Frankenstein, and writing and composing the music for the=20
Broadway adaptation of The Producers, the most Tony-award winning musical in=
=20
Broadway history.

Presentation proposals should examine Mel Brooks and his influence on popula=
r=20
culture. You may choose to examine one particular project or a selected bod=
y=20
of his work (e.g., his film spoofs of film genres such as science fiction or=
=20
westerns). You may also choose to examine his use of Nazis in many of his=20
films -- even anachronistically -- and centrally in his film adaptation of E=
rnst=20
Lubitsch=E2=80=99s 1941 film To Be or Not To Be and his early film and music=
al play=20

Proposals should be approximately 250 words in length and must include your=20
mailing address, telephone number, and email address.
