*Modernism and the Scene of Writing*

This panel, by focusing on representations of writing, suggests that
modernist dramatizations of writing, of "being text," signal moments of
"becoming modern," of a particular character or persona engaged directly
in a modernist project—and their successes, failures, and/or refusals
reflect the possibilities, limits, and consternations of the attempt.
The "writing scene" is a particularly generative analytical site for
thinking about literary modernism across national, racial, political,
and other boundaries because it confronts directly the problems of
applying literary technique to the chaos of 'modern' life. Please email
