CFP: Rethinking Radio's Publics (8/25/06; SCMS, 3/8/07-3/11/07)
Seeking submissions for a proposed panel at the SCMS Conference (March
8-11, 2007, Hilton, Chicago)
Panel Title: Rethinking Radio’s Public
Biswarup Sen, University of Oregon
In the nine or so decades of its existence radio has constituted
publics that range from the target for state-controlled “voices of
the nation†to the fragmentary audiences of contemporary talk,
satellite and internet radio. This panel proposes to interrogate the
modes of formation of these various publics, theorize their cultural
and political significance, and speculate on the changing features of
radio publics in the age of new media. Possible topics include: radio
and development, minority publics, the meaning of public radio, the
discourses of talk radio, national broadcasting, radio and
globalization. Papers that focus on radio’s impact in non-western
contexts are especially welcome.
