CFP: Wild Space in Medieval Romance (9/15/06; Kalamazoo, 5/10/07-5/13/07)
Abstracts are now being accepted for a session at the 2007 International
Medieval Congress in Kalamazoo, Michigan:
Wild Space in Medieval Romance
Wild Spaces in Medieval Romance As medieval studies becomes more
interdisciplinary, scholars are giving increased attention to the=20
spaces of
medieval romance that fall outside or on the periphery of familiar=20
Western
life. In addition to the forest, the wild place into which a hero might
venture in order to fulfill a quest or as penance for some misdeed, many
romances portray spaces that are altogether alien to the European=20
subject.
Romance may take the protagonist to far-away lands where people,=20
animals,
and landscapes look different and affect characters in peculiar ways,=20
or to
magical realms where regular social rules do not apply. This session
invites papers that explore what makes a space =93wild,=94 how these =
spaces
function within romance, and what their relationships are to more
=93civilized=94 spaces.
