UPDATE: China Abroad: Travels, Spaces, Subjects (no deadline noted; collection)
UPDATE: China Abroad: Travels, Spaces, Subjects (collection)
We are looking for contributions to a collection of critical essays, entitled
"China Abroad: Travels, Spaces, Subjects". The time frame of the "China Abroad"
project is the long twentieth century. The primary texts we would like to see
discussed are the accounts of travel (which may range from the classic
travelogue via film and personal memories to the contemporary blog), departures
and arrivals of a variety of travelers, including Chinese intellectuals,
Chinese migrant workers, and transnational or cosmopolitan travellers of
Chinese origin or ancestry. We hope that a discussion of these texts within the
specific historical and cultural contexts from which they emerge will help
raise more general theoretical questions about cultural translation, diaspora,
Chineseness, and China's changing global situation.
UPDATE!!!:
Most of our contributors and their topics are confirmed and we are now
EXCLUSIVELY looking for two contributions on 1) the China-India connection and
2) the China-Japan connection (particularly early C20).
The "China Abroad" project is in a very advanced planning stage, and Hong Kong
University Press has expressed a general interest in publishing the collection.
Completed essays of 6-8,000 words will be expected by the end of April 2007.
For further information and proposals please contact one of the editors as soon
as possible.
