Current Writing: Text and Reception in Southern Africa 17(2), October 2007

Special issue on Antjie Krog

Editors: Judith Lutge Coullie and Andries Visagie (University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa).

The author's name on the front cover of Change of Tongue dominates the space. This is because, Krog said recently, the publishers perceive the author to be the book's primary draw for prospective buyers. Whether this is an accurate assessment of readers' motivations or not, it points to something Krog's meteoric rise in status. Her works span multiple genres and, in many instances, appeal to both popular and academic markets. They are penned in both English and Afrikaans, but some have been translated into many other languages and, indeed, in the case of Country of my Skull, into Hollywoodese.

We invite submissions (in English) for a special issue devoted to critical responses to Krog's work. We welcome contributors from diverse disciplines such as (but not limited to): Journalism;
Film Studies;
Philosophy and/or Ethics;
Translation Studies;
English Studies;
Afrikaans Studies;
other languages into which her work has been translated.

Essays may cover (but do not have to be limited to) the following aspects of Antjie Krog's work:

* Sexuality in the poetry of Antjie Krog
* Krog's profile as a translator and mediator of South African culture
* Antjie Krog as a journalist (e.g. her work as editor of Die Suid-Afrikaan, SABC news reporter and book editor of Rapport)
* Krog as a writer of literary non-fiction
* Re-presenting the San: the Antjie Krog / Steven Watson plagiarism affair
* Antjie Krog and her literary fathers and mothers (Dot Serfontein, D.J. Opperman and others)
* Politics and aesthetics in Krog's writing
* Antjie Krog on the world stage

Please submit a 200 word abstract and brief cv to coulliej_at_ukzn.ac.za and/or visagiea_at_ukzn.ac.za by 15 November 2006.
Deadline for completed essays is 31 March 2007.
