CFP: Doctor Who (10/1/06; PCA/ACA, 4/4/07-4/7/07)
DOCTOR WHO
We are organizing at least one (but hopefully more) panel(s) on DOCTOR WHO
for the Science Fiction and Fantasy Area of the Popular Culture Association
for the 2007 conference of the ACA/PCA in Boston, Massachusetts, April 4-7,
2007.
DOCTOR WHO (DW) has returned to television with great acclaim and
popularity. The television series, which ran in Great Britain from 1963 to
1989, also had a television movie presented in 1996. The newest DW, seen in
Great Britain beginning in 2005, was accepted by fans and critics alike. The
United States has begun to watch DW on the SciFi cable channel and has seen
Christopher Eccleston as the ninth Doctor in Season One of the new series. A
second season of DW -- with a tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant -- is
eagerly anticipated .
Below is a list of those areas within which a critical discussion of DW can
be made. This is not an exhaustive list, and other critical investigations,
of course, will be considered for inclusion.
* Narrative -- How do the ten different Doctors affect the narrative dynamic
of the series
* Society -- How has contemporary society been revealed and shown change over
4+ decades through DW
* Feminism -- representation of women over 4+ decades through DW
* Masculinism -- representation of men over 4+ decades through DW
* The Alien Other in DW -- simply satire or something more
* Re-imaged Villains in DW -- have the monsters undergone a more realistic
portrayal over 4+ decades
* Re-imaged Doctor in DW -- has the Doctor become more human over 4+ decades
* Culture -- representations of contemporary British culture over 4+ decades
through DW
* War and peace as represented over 4+ decades through DW
* Low-budget and low-tech -- how class and craft overcome financial
difficulties
* 21st century series -- more funds, better effects, but is it the same DW
* Psychology -- Freudian, Jungian, Lacanian investigations of DW
