The Performance Studies Focus Group (PSFG) of the Association for
Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) invites proposals for panels,
seminars, roundtable discussions, performances, workshops, and other
innovative sessions for the annual ATHE Conference, which will be
held at the Sheraton in New Orleans, July 26-29, 2007.

This meeting offers scholars and artists the ability to engage with
post-Katrina New Orleans through responsible scholarship and
community engagement. In light of this context, the theme of this
year's ATHE conference is "Regenerations," and is offered alongside a
lexicon of related terms such as "rebuilding," "regrowth,"
"repetition/revision," "reimagining," and "referencing." The
Performance Studies Focus Group seeks panels and presentations that
directly speak to this theme as well as creative connections that
this theme may engender. In addition, we encourage submissions that
explore performance and creativity in a variety of contexts,
including, but not limited to: political performance, the performance
of race, class and gender, cultural translation, performance
ethnography, ritual performance, popular entertainments, pedagogy,
and performance theory. Sessions that directly address the borders
and relationship between Performance Studies and other aspects of
Theatre Studies are welcome.

In light of ATHE's location, we encourage ethnographic and site
specific submissions with potentially political and pro-active
components. We are interested in innovative scholarship and
performances that create the possibility of local outreach and
opportunities for reflection on the events surrounding the recent and
more expansive history of New Orleans and Louisiana. We are
particularly interested in proposals that are performative and that
engage with an audience in an interactive manner. The Performance
Studies Focus Group welcomes diverse presenters, and hopes to build
bridges between theatre and ritual practitioners, performance
artists, junior and senior scholars, and graduate students.

ATHE currently uses an electronic submission format. The information
and the form are located on the ATHE website, at http://www.athe.org/
conf/index.html. To submit a panel proposal, click on the link
titled, "Session Proposal Forms are available online." The main page
also has links to session format descriptions, ATHE's 2007 seminar
topics, and further proposal information. Please note that there
will be a limited amount of two-hour sessions to accommodate more
extensive dialogue for certain panels. Session Coordinators must
request this time slot on the form at the time of their application
request. The deadline for all submissions is November 1, 2006. Please
also request AV materials and guest passes by the November 1
deadline. You must request audiovisual equipment by May 1, 2007 to
avoid late fees.

While individual papers will receive consideration, submissions that
pull together a strong panel of participants are preferred. With
individual proposals, the Focus Group Conference Planner will curate
panels, attempting to match up related papers. In order to
facilitate this process, these must be received directly by the focus
group conference planner, at gwendolyn.alker_at_nyu.edu, by October 20.
Individual paper proposals should include title, contact information,
and an abstract of no more than 500 words.

Please note that ATHE also accepts proposals for Multidisciplinary
sessions and individual applicants for conference Seminars. All
session coordinators who are organizing Multidisciplinary panels must
contact the Conference Planners for all three sponsoring Focus Groups
before submitting their session directly to ATHE. Further information
on applying to Seminars for the 2007 conference will soon be
available at the ATHE website.
