By the end of the fifteenth century, it is clear that a culture of vengeance remains alive and well in England. The literature of late medieval England, both imaginative and otherwise, reveals a lively discourse on the nature of vengeance. At this time, the questions of vengeance begin to shift from a simple right vs. wrong action, to broader attempts to understand the role of vengeance in contemporary culture, its potential origins, and its implications for private and public spheres. Unfortunately, our understanding of vengeance in late medieval England is rather minimal. This panel therefore seeks studies that will help to expand our understanding through investigations of late medieval English treatments of vengeance. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, the role of emotion in vengeance, legal developments, social or political forms of vengeance, the rhetoric of vengeance, religion and vengeance, or vengeance and the stage.
