CFP: Building Bridges: Integrating Language, Linguistics, Literature and Translation in Pedagogy and Research (11/29/06; 3/21/07
The Department of English, College of Arts & Social Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, is pleased to announce its first International Conference to be held on 21 and 22 March, 2007. The theme of the Conference is: "Building Bridges: Integrating Language, Linguistics, Literature and Translation in Pedagogy and Research".
Papers in these four areas, explicitly addressing the idea of 'building bridges' and showing how collaboration between the four areas and cross-fertilization of ideas can lead to new ways of thinking and working as teachers and researchers, are invited. Topics may include, but need not be limited to, the following:
A) LANGAUGE
1. English and the Arab World: A Socio-Political Perspective
2. Contemporary Study of English and Arabic – Future Challenges
3. Arabic-English Lexicography
4. New Technologies and languages without a written form in the Arab World
5. English Language Studies in the Arab World
B) LINGUISTICS
1. Linguistic Diversity in Oman
2. Socio-Economic Development and Language Policy
3. Arabic and English – a Case of Linguistic Imperialism
4. Transfer and Interference for Arab Learners of English
C) LITERATURE
1. Folk Literatures in Oman
2. State of the Art of Comparative Literary Studies: English and Arabic
3. Arabic Literature in Translation
4. English Literary Studies in the Arab World in the 21st Century: Challenges
5. English Literature in an Arabic Context
D) TRANSLATION
1. Translation of Arabic/Omani Literary Studies: Present State and Future Prospects
2. Trends in Machine Translation
3. Application of Contemporary Linguistic Theory in Translation and Translation Studies
4. Translations: Bridging Worlds
5. Translation Studies in the Arab World: State of the Art
Abstracts of papers (between 400 and 600 words) including (a) title of paper and (b) name, affiliation and e-mail as well as postal addresses of the author(s) may be sent electronically as an attachment (Microsoft Word) to drbala2000_at_yahoo.co.uk.
Presentations will be for a duration of 20 minutes, followed by ten minutes of questions/discussions
Last date for receipt of abstracts: Wednesday, 29 November, 2006
