CFP: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Theatre (ATHE)
(11/01/06; 7/26/07-7/29/07)

The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) will hold its
21st annual conference July 26-29, 2007, at the Sheraton New Orleans in
New Orleans, Louisiana. As one of ATHE’s 23 focus groups, the Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Theatre Focus Group invites
proposals for the conference from scholars, graduate students, artists,
and practitioners.

THEME: DECADENCE
In connection with ATHE’s overall theme of “Regenerations,” LGBT’s
theme for 2007 is “Decadence.” In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina,
how have ideas of physical, moral, social, and artistic decadence
informed public perception and response to the city of New Orleans?
How do these notions mirror the concept of decadence applied to
“degenerate” and “non-reproductive” queer people? In what ways are
locations of great importance in queer history and culture positioned
as sites for the performance of decadence and degeneration? How do
issues of race, class, gender, geography, religion, age, and disability
intersect with queer constructions of a devastated location? How do
queer theater artists and scholars participate in and challenge the
building and re-building of a queer city? What role can decadence play
in regeneration?

Though we will consider any proposals on LGBTQ theatre and performance,
we are particularly interested in papers relating to our conference
theme. Proposals might focus on decay/decadence,
degenerates/degeneration, Creole/queer cultures, displacement/exile,
haunting/ghosts/zombies, carnal/carnivalesque, or jazz/riffing as they
apply to queer lives, theatre, performance, and scholarship.

LGBT will accept proposals for panel sessions with papers, poster
sessions, performances, seminars, panel discussions, and other
innovative formats. Submissions may be either discipline specific
(LGBT Focus Group only) or multidisciplinary (LGBT and other ATHE Focus
Groups). All ATHE members may submit proposals to the LGBT Focus Group.

PROPOSAL SUBMISSION
Proposals should offer full panels and must be completed online. Visit
http://www.athe.org for forms and directions. The final deadline for
all proposals is November 1, 2006. If you intend to list LGBT as a
sponsor for a multidisciplinary panel, please notify LGBT Conference
Planner Jordan Schildcrout at schildcr_at_ohio.edu.

Individual Papers and Assistance in Forming Panels: ATHE does not
accept proposals for individual papers. We encourage respondents to
use ATHE’s listserv or the LGBT listserv to develop full panels before
submitting individual papers. However, to assist respondents in
arranging panels, LGBT will accept 150-word abstracts of individual
papers through October 13, 2006. Send the abstract by email to the
LGBT Conference Planner at schildcr_at_ohio.edu. If possible, the
Conference Planner will group papers with similar themes and topics and
will introduce 3 or 4 respondents to each other through email. The
respondents will then be responsible for submitting a panel proposal to
ATHE by November 1, 2006.

Requests for Equipment: Visit ATHE’s website for information on the
availability of and associated costs for AV equipment. Requests for
grants to cover equipment costs MUST be submitted by November 1. It is
best to include requests for equipment and grants with your proposal.

Conference Registration/ATHE Membership: All presenters are required
register and pay the appropriate fees for the conference. Conference
presenters should be ATHE members unless they work outside the academic
study of theatre. Participants requesting and granted a Guest Pass by
the Conference Committee do not have to pay the registration fees, but
must still register, noting Guest Pass on the registration form

Requests for Grants and Passes: All requests for Grants and Guest
Passes must be submitted by November 1 and must accompany the panel
proposal. Guest Passes are not awarded to persons who are affiliated
with a college or university. Grants are often awarded to cover the
costs of equipment requested through ATHE.

Additional Information: Information on ATHE membership and on
conference costs is available at http://www.athe.org. Further
information on LGBT Theatre Focus Group is available at
http://www.athe.org/FG/lgt/index.html.

Debut Panel: A separate CFP for the Debut Panel (with a due date of
2/15/07) will be issued by issued shortly.
