Novalis writes, "Philosophy is really homesickness: it is the desire to
be at home everywhere." This conference will provide a forum for an
examination of "home" as place, idea, dream, object, memory, concept,
and expression. What function does the home serve in art? What are the
implications in literature of nostalgia and the loss of home? What role
do notions of personal and political identity play in considering home?
We are soliciting comparative papers that explore the way in which
"home" as an idea functions in a broad spectrum of genres and media from
antiquity to the present.=20
