Call for Papers: THE MEDIEVAL CITY

24th Annual Conference of the
ILLINOIS MEDIEVAL ASSOCIATION
23-24 February 2007
Eastern Illinois University

Keynote Speaker: C. David Benson, University of Connecticut

We seek abstracts for papers from a range of disciplines that address
the medieval city, broadly conceived as concrete or imagined space.
Avenues of inquiry might include; the city as metaphor
(physiological, psychological, political, social); the metaphysical
city; modern memories of the medieval city through physical
reconstructions or abstract representations of medieval city life;
the city as a site of memory (mnemonic, architectural, textual); the
locus of the city for art and artisans; the city/city life as ideal
and reality represented in art, artifacts, texts, and performance;
the reality of the city as revealed by archaeology and material
culture; politics, economics, social conflicts and consensus in the
medieval city. Further conceptions of medieval cities are also welcome.

Select conference papers will be published in the on-line journal
Essays in Medieval Studies.

Please send one-page abstracts for papers or for complete sessions by
October 27th, 2006 to Francine McGregor (fmcgregor_at_eiu.edu).
