Fear and Loathing: The Springboards of Modern Culture

April 24-26, 2007

Fear and demonization have been some of the most powerful forces enlisted to
create borders between cultures. The call to build a wall between the US &
Mexico, the terms Islamofascism, and surrender monkies, the glorification of
violence in popular media-all are current expressions of fear and
loathing. In America's past we have seen fear and loathing expressed in
regard to Fascism, the Red Scare, the KKK, Japanese internment camps, the
Reservation system, deportations of foreigners, eradications of languages
other than English.

For our thirteenth annual Multicultural Conference we request papers that
deal with the use of fear and loathing- as played out in culture, in the
arts, in politics, in business, in the legal system-in fashioning both
past and present cultural and ethnic divisions.

We invite faculty, administrators, and staff to participate in delivering
presentations or reading creative works within the conference

theme.

Those wishing to present should submit via email a paper title and a 100-150
word abstract outlining the proposed topic and mode of

presentation. Individuals interested in reading creative works should
submit samples of their work. Completed manuscripts should not

exceed 10 double-spaced pages of typescript so that papers can be presented
in a twenty-minute presentation. (Individual submissions

only.)

Final selection of conference participants will be made by November 30,
2006.

Deadline for Submissions: November 10, 2006
