"Northern Identities" / "Identités du Nord"

Further to its previous conferences, Peoples of Canada (June 2003) and The
Inuit of the Canadian Arctic and their circumpolar neigbours (March 2005),
The Multidisciplinary Institute of Canadian Studies (IPEC) in the University
of Rouen is pleased to announce an international multidisciplinary
conference on Northern Identities. The conference, organized in
collaboration with the International Laboratory for pluridisciplinary study
of representations of the North at the University du Québec à Montréal
(UQAM), will take place in Rouen, Thursday 29th to Saturday 31st of March,
2007.
How are northern identities constructed? What is the place, in northern
consciousness, of ethnicity, latitude, living conditions and awareness of
the South? How does the South see the North? Proposals are invited on these
questions. All parameters affecting the constitution of these identities
will be taken into account: intellectual, artistic, linguistic, religious,
sexual, culinary, etc. The development of these identities throughout
history and their use in ideology will be a matter of particular interest,
as will their status in contemporary thought and action, and the
epistemological question: how have people thought North and Nordicity?

Proposals (title, 500-word abstract and short biography) are requested
before October, the 15th, 2006 to be sent to IPEC by email to
ipec_at_univ-rouen.fr.

Dans la continuité des colloques qui se sont déjà tenus à Rouen (Peuples du
Canada en juin 2003 ; Les Inuit de l'Arctique canadien et leurs voisins du
monde circumpolaire : langues, cultures, représentations, en mars 2005),
l'Institut Pluridisciplinaire d'Etudes Canadiennes (I.P.E.C.) de
l'Université de Rouen a le plaisir d'organiser, en collaboration avec le
Laboratoire international d'étude multidisciplinaire comparée des
représentations du Nord, de l'Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), les
29, 30 et 31 mars 2007, un colloque international pluridisciplinaire sur le
thème : Identités du Nord / Northern Identities.
Comment les identités nordiques se construisent-elles ? Quelle est la place,
dans la conscience nordique, de l'ethnicité, de la latitude, des conditions
de vie et de la conscience du Sud ? Comment le Sud se représente-t-il le
Nord ? Telles sont les questions que l'on se propose d'aborder. On tiendra
compte de tous les paramètres qui peuvent entrer dans la constitution de ces
identités, qu'ils soient intellectuels, artistiques, langagiers, religieux,
sexuels, culinaires, etc. On s'intéressera aussi à l'évolution de ces
identités à travers l'Histoire, à leur exploitation idéologique, au statut
de l'identité dans la pensée ou l'action contemporaine et à cette question
épistémologique : comment a-t-on pensé Nord et nordicité jusqu'à présent ?

Les propositions de communications (titre, résumé de 500 mots environ et
biographie) sont à faire parvenir à l¹IPEC par voie électronique à
ipec_at_univ-rouen.fr pour le 15 octobre 2006.
