  UPDATED Submission Deadline: 3 November 2006

  I am seeking papers, abstracts, and panel proposals for the documentary area of the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association conference to be held April 4-7, 2007, at the Boston Marriott Copley Place in Boston, MA.

  All topics related to documentary are welcome. Of particular interest this year are presentations that address the role of independent documentary in the current wartime situation and its impact, such as Voices of Iraq, A Company of Soldiers, Iraq in Fragments, Baghdad ER, The War Tapes, and The Ground Truth, just to name a few. Some questions to consider include the following: How does independent documentary provide an alternative voice and perspective? How does it represent the more graphic and intense situations? How do documentaries about Iraq align with or deviate from documentaries about other wars?

  Presentations outside this topic also are welcome. Some possibilities include:

  * literary influences on documentary film
  * contemporary directors
  * issues of representation
  * documentary as social activism
  * documentary production and distribution
  * documentary and ethnography
  * home video
  * truth and ethics
  * documentary photography and radio

  If you are interested, please send a one-page, 250-300 word proposal for a 15-20 minute presentation by e-mail to hmm160_at_psu.edu. You also can send it by mail to Heather McIntosh, College of Communications, 115 Carnegie Building, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802.

  In your correspondence, please include your name, the title of your presentation, an e-mail and postal address, academic affiliation (if applicable).

  The deadline for proposal and panel submissions is November 3, 2006.
