The deadline has been extended for this CFP. Please read through for
updated information.
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
We are organizing at least one (but hopefully more) panel(s) on BATTLESTAR
GALACTICA for the Science Fiction and Fantasy Area of the Popular Culture
Association for the 2007 conference of the ACA/PCA in Boston, Massachusetts,
April 4-7, 2007.
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (BSG) is one of the most highly acclaimed science
fiction television series ever. A serious use of the future to explore the
present, BSG is regularly praised by mainstream critics as an important
drama not to be missed.
There are several areas within BSG that beg for discussion in a critical
assembly. There are several areas of critical examination available for
scholars, including, but not limited to:
* Masculinism -- both positive and negative
* Feminism -- both positive and negative
* Ethnicity -- Asians, African-Americans, Caucasians
* Religion
* The Culture of the Military
* Women warriors -- military and subversive
* Women as Eve and Lillith, Madonna and Hecate -- traditional roles
disguised as
enlightened autonomous females
* Adam and Cain, Ismael and Isaac, Joshua and Moses, Christ and Paul --
traditional roles or enlightened males
* Technology -- both new and retro
* Post 9/11 references -- to what end is this use of 9/11 history/current
events?
* Psychology -- Freudian, Jungian, Lacanian
* Social interaction -- military with civilians, captives with captors,
lovers,
adversaries, mixed ethnicities
* Old vs. New -- 1970s BSG compared/contrasted with 21st century BSG
* Comparing Cmdr. Adamas -- Lorne Greene vs. Edward James Olmos
* Musical motifs within the series
* Any other critical study
Proposals should be approximately 250 words in length and must
*include*your mailing address, telephone number, and email address.
All proposals should be emailed to *both* panel organizers. DO NOT SEND
