The Violent (Re)turn to Ethics?: Implications, Complications, and Situations

Another Backlash: Current Responses to Feminist Works

Susan Faludi's 1992 book Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women asserts that Second Wave feminism, while allowing for great leaps forward in terms of various types of female protection, also generated animosity that left feminism with a dirty name. Now, fourteen years later, how do the ethical implications of feminism, post-feminism, third wave feminism respond to feminism's past? Have the ethics of feminism changed or is feminist work still focused on issues addressed or inadequately addressed in the past? What kind of ethical responsibility do contemporary women have in maintaining or breaking down notions of what it means to be a feminist? How do the writers self-identified as feminists speak from a politics of ethics or do they?

The Southwest Graduate English Symposium at Arizona State University is asking for twenty minute presentations that focus on any of these questions as well as speak back to other academic and public fields (gender, race, science, technology, religion, art, history, philosophy, politics, etc.). The conference is inclusive and also welcomes creative interpretations of the topic. Please send 300 word abstracts by Novermber 30th to asu2007sym_at_yahoo.com attention: Stephanie.
