We invite paper and panel proposals on African-American literature for the
38th annual meeting of CEA. This years general conference theme is "Empathy
and Ethics." Proposals that offer new and inventive readings on
African-American literature will also be considered. Please interpret the
conference theme broadly including but not limited to the following areas:

How are empathy and/or ethics portrayed in African American literature?
Howand/ or do other cultures and races show empathy towards African
Americans?
How do African Americans respond to acts of racism and racial oppression?
Must responses to acts of terror be ethical?
How do institutions, such as the Black church, teach empathy?
Education—teaching Black children, Brown vs. Board of Education, dilapidated
schools
Economic—poverty, access to job opportunities, unemployment, affirmative
action
Personal Tragedy—Aids in the black community, death, access to health care

Submit abstracts of no more than 500 words by November 30, 2006.
