Imagining Brooklyn
The Center for the Study of Brooklyn and the Ethyl R.Wolfe Institute for the
Humanities announce two interdisciplinary half-day conferences about
Brooklyn to be held at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.
Entitled "Imagining Brooklyn," the conferences will ask what makes Brooklyn
Brooklyn. With much of Brooklyn undergoing a major social and cultural
change to match its architectural transformation, we will explore the
borough¹s identity, past and present; the role of its ethnic and
neighborhood communities in creating that identity; its tradition of
authenticity; and the idea of Brooklyn as cool. We call for papers that
explore images of Brooklyn from a variety of critical perspectives and
methodological approaches. Issues may include demographic and cultural
change; language; gentrification; the history, literature, music, and art of
Brooklyn; humor and Brooklyn identity; and the role of memory and nostalgia
in the culture of Brooklyn.
"Imagining Brooklyn" will take place in conjunction with Brooklyn College's
reading and interview series, ³Brooklyn on My Mind.²
The conferences will run from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. on Feb. 26, 2007 and May 7,
2007, followed in each case at 7 p.m. by the ³Brooklyn on My Mind² series,
in which WNYC Radio host Leonard Lopate will interview prominent writers who
have a Brooklyn connection.
³Imagining Brooklyn: Community and Identity² will precede ³Jewish-American
Writing After Roth² on Feb. 26. That panel will discuss how recent
generations of writers are examining the representation of Jewish
communities in Brooklyn and elsewhere in new and interesting ways. Nathan
Englander, author of the short story collection For the Relief of Unbearable
Urges, Myla Goldberg, The Bee Season and Wickett's Remedy, and Alice
Mattison, The Wedding of the Two-Headed Woman and In Case We're Separated:
Connected Stories, will be the panelists and readers.
³Imagining Brooklyn: Nostalgia and Amnesia² will precede an evening with
memoirist Frank McCourt on May 7.
