Call for Papers
SEA AT CEA:
Literature of the Sea at the College English Association 38th Annual
Conference
12-14 April 2007
New Orleans, Louisiana
PIRATES! of the Gulf
FROM Captain Singleton to Jack Sparrow, literary pirates have been a cut
above (argh, what a pun!), a breed whose vices seldom succeed in
extinguishing their virtues. In the context of this year's CEA theme of
"Empathy and Ethics," SEA at CEA calls for papers that examine the topos of
the pirate ethic throughout our literary culture.
We encourage talks on such obvious pirateers as Defoe, Ellms, and
Esquemeling, such major and minor voices as Cooper, Ingraham, Audubon,
Melville, and Conrad, and such characters as Ann Bonney, Lafitte, and
Captain Jack himself.
SEA at CEA also encourages broader examinations of pirate history, culture,
and technology as they impact our literary heritage.
Send proposals clearly marked "SEA at CEA" to the CEA call-for-papers
database:
http://english.ttu.edu/cea/conftool
Deadline for proposals: November 30, 2006
To preserve time for discussion, CEA limits presentations to 15 minutes.
All presenters must become members of the College English Association by
January 1, 2007. For membership information, contact Joe Pestino at
jpestin5_at_naz.edu.
