The Black Church:
Past, Present, Future

The Department of English at Texas Southern University invites you to
submit papers to be presented at the 2007 J. Marie McCleary Symposium on
"The Black Church: Past, Present, Future." The symposium runs March
29-30 at Texas Southern University, Houston, TX.

The 2007 McCleary Symposium will include presentations that incorporate
such various approaches as the black church as a social, cultural and
political transformational edifice; literary interpretations of the
church; music and song in and outside the church; architectural
interpretations; the church in painting; the role of the minister and
ministering; and other topics. You are encouraged to look beyond these
guidelines and to challenge traditional notions. This is the Eighth
Annual J. Marie McCleary Interdisciplinary Symposium on the Arts. The
conference will be held on the campus of Texas Southern University in
Houston, TX, March 29-30, 2007. Selected papers will also be eligible
for publication in an electronic edition of the conference's
proceedings.

Please submit your 200-500 word abstract by January 15, 2007, in either
electronic, fax, or mail form. Individual presentations are limited to
20 minutes. Panel organizers should explain their topics and state the
names of the panel members. Time allocations for panels will be decided
based on the submitted abstracts.
