CALL FOR WORKSHOPS AND INDIVIDUAL PAPERS

"American Bodies, American Violence"

University of Tampere, Finland
May 24-26, 2007

We are looking for contributions on the theme of violence in/and North America
in various different contexts and fields of study (literature, history, film
studies, gender studies, queer studies, sociology, political studies, media
studies, environmental studies, and so on).

How have different acts and forms of violence influenced North America and the
ways in which we represent and imagine North America? And, conversely, how do
representations of violence affect how we perceive North America? In
particular,
we are inviting workshops on these two interrelated themes: nation and
violence,
and violence done to bodies/bodily violence.

The following list might help the workshop organizers focalize these
larger themes:

- violence and national history, nation-formation, expansion
- violence and politics; assassinations, conspiracy theories and national
   traumas
- violence and the West; the Frontier
- war and violence; violence, memory and commemoration
- gender and ethnicity in representations of war (war films and literature)
- gendered and sexualized violence
- race and violence, racial(ized) violence
- violence in/and the family
- body and social control: medicine, policing bodies and control technologies;
   self-discipline and 'healthy' bodies
- the criminal body, the monstrous body, the alien body, the polluting/viral
   body
- contagion, body panics and paranoia; biological warfare; epidemics
and history
- human body and the experience of nature, violence against nature and
   non-humans (ecocriticism and environmental history/ethics/politics/poetics)
- representation of violence in verbal and visual modes
- violence in fictional and non-fictional texts
- violence in literary genres and popular fiction (e.g., crime
fiction, science
   fiction, horror fiction, the Western)
- bodies as/and machines: the cyborg and the future of the human; body, gender
   and technology

Workshop or paper proposals should include the following: the name and
institutional affiliation of the organizer or speaker (mailing address & email
address) and a 300-word description of the workshop's/paper's topic. The
deadline is November 15, 2006. (Workshop proposals are preferred over
individual
papers.)
