CFP: Intersections, Margins, and Parallels in Cultural Production
(Grad; 01/22/07; 03/9-10/07)

We are pleased to invite proposals for an interdisciplinary graduate
student conference organized
by the Department of English at the University of Victoria to be held
March 9-10, 2007. This
year's keynote speaker will be Marshall Grossman of the University of Maryland.

The theme for the 2007 conference is "Playing the Angles:
Intersections, Margins, and
Parallels in Cultural Production." How do ideas interact in different
fields of cultural
production? Whatever our disciplinary or theoretical approach to
cultural production, we often
encounter points of intersection between two or more ideas, discover
ideas on the margins of the
field, and/or see ideas that run parallel to one another.

At this conference, we intend to pick up threads of inquiry from both
among and within the
disciplines and see where they lead us. Where do those threads cross
and what happens when
they meet? What voices are on the margins of the conversation? How do
parallel topics mirror
each other and what is the effect of this relationship?

We welcome papers from a variety of disciplines that identify points
of intersection, explore
issues of marginality, and/or draw parallels in areas related to
cultural production. Papers should
be approximately 20 minutes long, including a 5-minute question period.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

* Relations between science/technology and literature
* Psychoanalysis and literature
* Relations between visual and print communication
* Issues of gender and sexuality in cultural production
* Interdisciplinary studies in the academy
* Intersecting, competing, and parallel ideas in critical theory
* Relations between ideology and form
* Relations between readers and texts
* Relations between past texts and present contexts
* Relations between religion and the arts
* The interaction of violence and cultural production

Proposals of 200-400 words, plus a 50 word abstract to be included in
the conference program,
may be sent to David Cecchetto at davidcec_at_uvic.ca by January 22,
2007. Please include your
name, address, telephone number, email address, and institutional
affiliations. Only email
submissions will be accepted.
