Travel Literature and India

Satyawati College (Evening), (University of Delhi), Ashok Vihar Phase III, Delhi 52 in collaboration with the Centre for Travel Writing Studies, Nottingham Trent University, proposes to hold a two-day interdisciplinary conference on Travel literature and India on 20-21st February, 2007. Researchers with academic backgrounds in sociology, anthropology, journalism, history, geography, economics, literature, arts and tourism studies are invited to present papers on the subject. Travel has long been used as a metaphor for the journey of life. Equally travel has given occasion to much writing from the Grand Tours of the seventeenth century to the present. The conference would explore the ever-changing relationship between travel and literature. The attempt would be to examine the ways "India" has been variously represented, construed, constructed or parodied in the pre-colonial, colonial, post-colonial and neocolonial contexts. There have been travelers, explorers, soldiers, dipl!
 omats, missionaries and natural historians who have journeyed to and from India and have documented their travels in journals, diaries, memoirs and chronicles. There is a wealth of such literature in the regional languages. The latest in the series of travelers has been the journalist. In the contemporary world of media involvement, projections of India unto the world stage with the boom in the tourism sector have changed how the world views India. Equally travel from India has multiplied with the world becoming a smaller place. The boost in the Tourism sector has had a lasting impact on the economy. Papers that document and challenge these accounts from the fields of photography, film, fashion, customs, religion and literature are welcome. The possible themes would include:
  Narratives and counter narratives
 Modes of travel and experience
  Theorizing the journey
  Cultural confrontation
  Self-representation
 Travel and translation
  Travel and globalization
 Travel and Journalism
 Travel accounts as the 'historical truth'
  Travel as a gendered pursuit
 Representation of places, peoples and pasts
 The Third-World Cosmopolitan
  Reader Reception

Prof Tim Youngs, Director, Centre for Travel Writing Studies, Nottingham Trent University is our invited speaker.

The presentations should be 20 minutes long. Abstracts of about 250 words including title, professional affiliation, addresses (especially e-mail), phone number, and Audio-Visual requirements are invited. Electronic submissions are highly encouraged. Technical support will be supplied by the conference, including overhead projectors, slide projectors, DVD and VHS platforms.
