CFP: Droppin' Knowledge Through Hip-Hop Performance (no deadline noted; ATHE, 7/26/07-7/29/07)
I am looking for members interested in participating in the following panel.
Kevin Poole
Naropa University, Boulder
"Droppin' Knowledge Through Hip-Hop Performance"
My individual proposal is comprised of a dramatic scene between two rap MCs,
one black and one white, written in spoken word. I am seeking people who
might be interested in forming a panel for the 2007 ATHE Conference in New
Orleans (July 26-29) on the theme of hip-hop and performance. The
conference will be centered on the theme "Regenerations: Theater and
Performance as a Regenerative Force". This panel will explore the power of
hip-hop as a force for social change through the media of language, poetry,
and music as well as through the culture associated with hip-hop.
My individual piece is created as a dialogic performance that delves into
race relations and expectations in American society from the tongues of two
poets. I'm investigating the intersection between spoken word/rap/hip-hop
and theater; performed poetry as theory; race issues embedded within
hip-hop; cultural ownership, agency, and co-option; and performance of
racialized identities (white and black) among other topics.
Please let me know if you have similar work that could speak to this piece
through the formation of a performance or critical panel for the ATHE
Conference. You can contact me aty kdwayne_at_gmail.com.
