Life-Long Learning: Creative Approaches to Fostering Autonomous Learning

This is an age of globalization. With the development of technology, accessibility of information, and explosion of knowledge, the locale of learning is no longer confined to classrooms; the span of learning does not end when one leaves school. Therefore, language educators should make good use of creative approaches to foster learner autonomy so that students can become life-long learners.

      The theme of "The 24th International Conference on English Teaching and Learning in the Republic of China" is "Life-Long Learning: Creative Approaches to Fostering Autonomous Learning." This conference will invite scholars from the areas of language teaching, linguistics, literature, and related areas to engage in dialogue and discussions from the perspectives of life-long learning and the creative approach. The suggested topics of the conference include:

Learner autonomy as an educational goal (curriculum)
Learner autonomy and the use of authentic materials
Learner autonomy and the teaching of literature
Learner autonomy and the teaching of language (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
Focusing on the language learner: styles, strategies, and beliefs
Planning and managing self-access learning (e.g. the writing center)
Methods of self-assessment
Ways to encourage reflection and metacognitive learning
Stylistics and the learner's literary competence
Simulation and classroom assessment
One-on-one conferences / the role of learning counselor
Creating positive environments for autonomous learning
CALL, WELL, and TELL: technology-enhanced autonomous learning
Material design for autonomous learning
Collaboration in support of autonomous learning
Feedback and assessment for autonomous learning
Cross-cultural aspects of promoting autonomy

Types of Presentation: (Chinese or English)
Paper: To enable conference participants to listen to a presentation on a theoretically sound and research-based study. The abstract should include the purpose, design, and results of the study. Duration: 30 minutes—20 minutes for the presentation, followed by 10 minutes for questions and comments.
Workshop: To provide conference attendees with a hands-on opportunity to participate in a learning experience. The abstract should include the nature and purpose of the presentation and the tasks required of the participants. Duration: 45 minutes.
Symposium: To allow 3-4 speakers to give short presentations on a common topic and interact with each other and the audience. An overview of the topic and the main ideas to be covered in no more than 500 words should be submitted by November 20th, 2006. Duration: 90 minutes

Abstract Submission:
Three copies of the abstract with a maximum of 300 words written in either Chinese or English (without name of the author(s)) along with an information sheet of the presenter (s) (affiliation, job title, address, telephone number, and e-mail address) must be submitted to the conference either by regular mail or e-mail by November 20th, 2006.
If you choose to submit the abstract by regular mail, please send a hard copy and an electronic version (on a floppy disk or CD Rom) to the following address:
