New Zealand's Centenary as a Dominion
 
The 14th annual conference of the New Zealand Studies Association
together with the
Centre for New Zealand Studies, Birkbeck, University of London

This major international event sees NZSA combining with the recently
established Centre for New Zealand Studies (CNZS). 2007 marks the
centenary of New Zealand as a dominion and, over a period of 3 days,
this conference will address a range of issues covering the last 100
years of New Zealand's history. This will include a half- day focus -
Taha Maori - which will consider Maori perspectives on the last 100
years. The conference will be held on 28 and 29 June at University of
London, and on Saturday 30 June in the Penthouse of New Zealand
House. A conference dinner is planned for the Friday night and a
special evening function (details to come) on the Saturday. Confirmed
keynote speakers include Dr Claudia Bell (Univ. of Auckland), Prof.
Lyman Tower Sargent (Univ. of Missouri - St. Louis), Dr Manying Ip
(Univ. of Auckland), and Prof. Lydia Wevers (Victoria Univ. of
Wellington). A further three keynotes will be announced soon.
Proposals for 20 minute papers must be sent by 19 January to either
Dr Ian Conrich, Chair of NZSA and Director of CNZS
<ian_at_ianconrich.co.uk>, Dr Dominic Alessio, Vice-Chair of NZSA
<alessid_at_Richmond.ac.uk>, or Dr Michelle Keown, Membership Secretary
of NZSA. Abstracts need to be 250-300 words and accompanied by a bio
sketch of 100-150 words. A decision on proposals received will be
made by 31 January. Initial enquiries pre-proposal are welcomed and
we will give priority to proposals received from members of NZSA.
The conference will accept proposals on all subjects to do with New
Zealand's cultural and national identity over the last 100 years. But
we are particularly keen to receive papers that address New Zealand's
relationship with Britain, regional influences such as the Scottish,
Irish and the Welsh within New Zealand, or the ways in which New
Zealand has been Anglicised/ sought to move away from an Anglo
influence. We are also keen to receive papers for the Taha Maori part
of the conference. Subjects covered by this conference include, among
others, anthropology, communities, cultural studies, economics, the
environment, film, gender, geography, globalisation, history,
identity, law, lifestyles, literature, material culture, media
studies, music, politics, race and ethnicity, sport, theatre, and
tourism.
