American Association of Australian Literary Studies

The American Association of Australian Literary Studies holds an annual conference where members present their academic work in Australian literary and cultural studies. The meeting affords an opportunity for intellectual and social interaction with fellow scholars from around the world. The Wertheim Prize is awarded each year for the best paper by a Graduate Student. In addition to the presentation of academic work, the conference features readings by Australian writers and a conference dinner with a keynote speaker. Recent conference locations include Montreal, Boston, New York, Richmond and Kansas City, with readings by Peter Carey, Janette Turner Hospital, Kevin Hart, Jonathan Bennett, Andrew Sant, Lesley Stern and John Kinsella.

The 2007 AAALS Conference will be held at Georgetown University in Washington, DC from March 22-24.

Conference Theme: Literature and Politics
Papers are sought on all aspects of the topic, including literary responses to: domestic or foreign policy, law, or economics; cultural politics; diplomacy, war, and protest; nationalism and internationalism; international organizations and NGOs; sport/s and popular culture; patriotism and patriot acts; expatriates, exiles, and refugees; Australia and the Commonwealth; Australia and the United States; Australia and Asia;Australia and the Middle East Papers on similar topics in film, music, and folklore are also welcome, as are discussions of New Zealand and the South Pacific region.
