CFP: Cassola Conference on Teaching Communication (12/15/06; 4/13/07)
The Cassola Conference Committee is accepting proposal for this year's
conference entitled "Controversy and Communication," to be held April
13, 2007 at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI. This year's
keynote speaker is Cherry Arnold, producer of the documentary film
"Buddy," about former Providence mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci.=20
Martin Luther King once said, "The ultimate measure of a man is not
where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he
stands at times of challenge and controversy." In the field of teaching
communications, we not only deal with controversial topics, but the very
nature of our attempts to communicate and to teach our students how to
effectively communicate can be controversial. We've all been on the "hot
seat," put in situations where we need to craft messages and convey
ideas to an audience with diverse and sometimes opposing interests, and
this skill needs to be shared with students.=20
How do we communicate in a democratic society, with competing ideas and
values, with the threat (or promise!) of controversy affecting our
ability, desire, and even need to communicate? William Hazlitt once
said, "When a thing ceases to be a subject of controversy, it ceases to
be a subject of interest." Is the very act of communication inherently
controversial? Is controversy inherent in successful communication?
College and high school teaching faculty, as well as graduate students,
are encouraged to submit proposals. In addition, we welcome proposals
from faculty of all disciplines, as well as proposals addressing
interdisciplinary approaches to communication. And while this year's
theme is "Communication and Controversy," proposals addressing other
aspects of communication are also welcome.
