CFP: LGBT Theatre Debut Panel / ATHE 2007 (2/15/07; 7/26/06-7/29/07)

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Theatre Focus Group of the
Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) invites submissions
for its Debut Panel from scholars who have not yet published articles
or presented at a national conference. The deadline for submissions is
February 15, 2007.

In connection with ATHE’s conference theme of “Regenerations,” LGBT’s
theme for 2007 is “Decadence.” Our theme explores the ways that
notions of physical, moral, social, and artistic decadence shape our
understanding of queer identities, communities, and performances. What
role can “queer decadence” play in regeneration? For the Debut Panel,
all proposals on LGBTQ theatre and performance (whether related to the
theme or not) will receive equal consideration.

We encourage interdisciplinary submissions in which LGBTQ issues are
viewed in conjunction with or through various disciplines/approaches
such as gender studies, race/ethnicity studies, religious studies,
popular culture, and performance studies. Recent debut panel papers
include “My Father’s Suit: Toward Historicizing Cross-Gender
Masculinity in the Solo Work of Peggy Shaw,” “Singing Our Queer Hearts
Out: Performing Receptions at the Buffy Sing-A-Long,” and “Performers
in the Audience: The Boulton and Park Trial of 1871.”

Both graduate students and faculty members are eligible to submit.
Submissions will be evaluated by a jury of theatre scholars who will
select three papers to be presented at the conference. The jury will
consist of Dr. Robert A. Schanke, Professor Emeritus of Central
College; Dr. Noreen Barnes, Director of Graduate Studies in Theatre at
Virginia Commonwealth University; and Dr. Sarah Bay-Cheng, Assistant
Professor of Theatre and Media Studies at the University of Buffalo.
Professor Schanke will act as respondent during the session, and
Professor Barnes will serve as chair.

Selection of papers is competitive. Authors of selected papers will
present them at the ATHE conference, which will be held July 26-29,
2007, at the Sheraton New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana. All
presenters must register and pay the appropriate fees for the
conference. Conference presenters should be ATHE members unless they
work outside the academic study of theatre.

Papers should be an appropriate length for a fifteen-minute
presentation (approximately eight pages). Send FOUR copies of your
complete paper and a cover sheet to:
