Southwest Graduate English Symposium – 2007
The Gothic and the Sublime: Romanticism and Reason
As I was walking among the fires of Hell,
delighted with the enjoyments of Genius;
which to Angels look like torment and insanity.
I collected some of their Proverbs. – William Blake, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, 1790
How should we read these famous lines from Blake's masterpiece? What is the place of Reason in religion? Passion in morality? The Gothic in the Sublime – and vice versa?
This panel seeks papers and presentations that engage questions of ethics in Romanticism, specifically in the conflicts, contradiction, and correlations of the Gothic and the Sublime. Topics may include, but are not limited to: literature, philosophy, art, religion, the sciences, and individuals of the period.
Please plan a 15 minute presentation. Submit title and 300 word abstracts, with name, university affiliation, address, phone number(s), and email address to: asu2007symp_at_yahoo.com
